J.R. Merritt Controls, Inc. was established in 1986 as a distributor and service center for Spohn & Burkhardt GmbH & Co., one of the first manufacturers of industrial switchgear. Spohn & Burkhardt was founded in 1920 by Karl Spohn and David Burkhardt and remains in family ownership. The Blaubeuren factory began as a manufacturer of electric motors, but production was soon extended to include logic elements and controllers. The factory was extended in 1955. New production facilities were added in 1964, 1980,1990, 2006 and 2009 in Schelklingen. The firm has approximately 250 employees. The production program includes control stands for feed machines and both building and ship cranes, and switches, resistors, starters as electric and electronic controllers for many applications. Today exports form an increasing proportion of sales. Clients are served by a dealer system in over 25 countries and are offered carefully customized solutions, as well as a level of post-sales service which is unique in the industry.
